Although Air Canada first claimed that the breach only involved a small amount of employee personal information, the attackers claimed that the documents they obtained contained a large amount of data. The material exfiltrated from 2008 to 2023 includes technical and operational information, SQL backups, employee personal information, vendor data, private papers, and company database archives, according to screenshots given by the attackers as evidence on the dark web. In January 2023, the ransomware gang BianLian, which targeted vital infrastructure, turned to extortiononly attacks. Despite acknowledging the threats, Air Canada hasnt formally identified the group.
